Google's DeepMind has announced the launch of two new AI models designed to enable robots to perform a wide range of real-world tasks without prior training.

The most prominent of these two models is Gemini Robotics, which can understand new situations and interact with its surrounding environment in a more sophisticated manner. It is based on Gemini 2.0, the latest version of Google's leading artificial intelligence model.

Carolina Parada, director of robotics at Google DeepMind, explained that the new model leverages Gemini's multi-modal understanding of the environment and adds the ability to perform physical actions, giving robots more precision and flexibility.

The Gemini Robotics model focuses on three key areas essential for developing more effective robots: generalization, interaction, and manual dexterity. It is capable of adapting to new scenarios, interacting efficiently with people and surrounding environments, and performing precise tasks, such as folding paper or opening a bottle.

According to Parada, the model represents a significant leap forward in these aspects combined, contributing to the development of robots that are more responsive and capable of dealing with environmental changes.

Alongside Gemini Robotics, DeepMind launched the Gemini Robotics-ER model, which relies on embodied reasoning to understand dynamic environments and make appropriate decisions.

Embodied reasoning is a concept in artificial intelligence that refers to a system's ability to understand the physical world, make decisions based on its sensory perception, and interact directly with the environment.

DeepMind emphasized that safety is a top priority, as Gemini Robotics-ER is trained to assess the safety of any action before it is implemented. The company also unveiled a new framework and benchmarks to assist AI safety research.
