The FIFA office in Africa was inaugurated yesterday, Saturday, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, during a ceremony chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The opening ceremony was attended by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) President Fouzi Lekjaa, and several other dignitaries.
In a speech on the occasion, Infantino stressed that this event represents “a historic moment and a happy celebratory day that will be immortalized in letters of gold in the history of FIFA and football in Africa, Morocco, and the world.” He added that “the opening of FIFA’s Africa office comes at the right time, especially as it coincides with the celebrations of the glorious Throne Day,” highlighting that the Mohammed VI Football Complex represents “an amazing and wonderful infrastructure.”
The FIFA President thanked His Majesty King Mohammed VI for the "strong impetus he has given to the development of sports on the continent," praising the royal "unique" vision for the advancement of football.
He highlighted that the Mohammed VI Football Complex, which houses the FIFA Africa Office, has become a pivotal center for African football and a testament to a country and a continent that looks to the future. He added, "The facility we are inaugurating today is not just a FIFA office in Africa, but a global FIFA center that will have a global impact on the practice of this sport."
The FIFA President noted that Morocco will host several major sporting events, including the 2025 Men's Africa Cup of Nations, the next five editions of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, and the 2030 World Cup, which the Kingdom will host in partnership with Spain and Portugal. In this context, he said, "The world will unite here in Morocco."
He also highlighted that the Women's Africa Cup of Nations final, which will be held this Saturday evening in Rabat between Morocco and Nigeria, will be a "huge and beautiful celebration" for women's football in Morocco and Africa, noting that the Moroccan public's enthusiasm for football is unique in the world.
For his part, Patrice Motsepe expressed his happiness at the opening of FIFA's Africa office in Morocco, stating that "there is no better place than Morocco to host this office." In this context, he thanked His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his ongoing efforts to promote football on the continent, emphasizing that African football has reached world-class levels.
The CAF President praised the achievements of African teams at the recent World Cup in Qatar, particularly Morocco, which reached the semi-finals, expressing his belief that African football will lead the world in the coming years.
For his part, Mr. Lekjaa emphasized that the Mohammed VI Football Complex, which houses the FIFA African Bureau, is the fruit of the insightful vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and embodies a strategy aimed at developing the capabilities of Moroccan and African youth. He added that this vision aspires to make Morocco “a welcoming and converging land for talents coming from all over the world.”
The same spokesperson emphasized that the office reflects FIFA's interest in African football and its various categories, noting that Morocco has always been and remains a country of tolerance and dialogue between civilizations.
It's worth noting that the agreement to establish the FIFA Africa office in Morocco was signed last December in Marrakech, on the sidelines of the 2024 CAF Awards ceremony. The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa.
