The Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Wehbe, and his Spanish counterpart, Felix Bolaรฑos, signed, on Tuesday in Madrid, a joint declaration of intent between Morocco and Spain in the field of justice, as part of the preparations for organizing the 2030 World Cup.
The signing of this declaration, on the sidelines of the two ministers’ meeting, falls within the framework of strengthening the historic bilateral cooperation relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Spain.
The declaration of intent includes many axes, including strengthening judicial cooperation to confront the challenges posed by organized crime, especially through intensifying dialogue, exchanging information and experiences in the judicial field, and strengthening existing judicial cooperation. It is also related to modernizing the judicial system, through digital transformation, facilitating access to justice, adopting alternative mechanisms for resolving disputes, and managing cases of a cross-border nature.
Given the importance of effective judicial cooperation in supporting the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup, through the exchange of experiences and best practices, this joint declaration of intent also covers the activation of joint committees by organizing periodic meetings of the joint committees stipulated in the civil and criminal judicial cooperation agreements, in continuation of the discussions that took place in Madrid during the month of April 2024.
The two ministers renewed their emphasis on the depth of friendly relations and constructive cooperation between the two countries, which is embodied through the signing and implementation of many international agreements in the judicial field.
They also stressed the pivotal role of this cooperation in preparing well for organizing the 2030 World Cup, considering that modernizing the judiciary and enhancing its effectiveness is an essential element for ensuring legal security and the smooth conduct of major international events.
In this context, and given the tripartite nature of organizing this sporting event, the two ministers expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation through special agreements, especially through the Joint Justice Committee between Morocco, Spain and Portugal, which will form an organizing framework for work and coordination until the completion of the organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
This meeting provided an opportunity to review the latest developments in legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries, explore new horizons for partnership, and exchange views on issues of common interest. Particular emphasis was also placed on the importance of strengthening judicial and legal cooperation mechanisms to create an appropriate legal environment that contributes to the successful joint organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, This is in recognition of the pivotal role that judicial cooperation plays in ensuring legal security and good organization of this global sporting event.
The signing ceremony of the joint declaration of intent was attended by the Moroccan Ambassador to Spain, Karima Benaich, the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Enrique Ojeda, the Director of International Cooperation and Communication at the Ministry of Justice, and the Director of Criminal Affairs, Pardons and Crime Monitoring.
