The Syrian opposition announced on Sunday that it had liberated Damascus and toppled the 24-year rule of President Bashar al-Assad. The opposition statement on state television said: “Thank God, the city of Damascus has been liberated and the tyrant Bashar al-Assad has been overthrown.”

The opposition added that all detainees had been released, while two senior Syrian army officers revealed that President Bashar al-Assad had left the country on a plane to an unknown destination.

Eyewitnesses reported that thousands of Syrians in cars and on foot gathered in a main square in Damascus and chanted for freedom.

On the other hand, the official spokesman for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Christophe Lemoyne, said on Sunday that France “welcomes the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime” after “more than 13 years of violent repression against the Syrian people.”

He added in a statement that Paris “urges all Syrians to unity and reconciliation and to reject all forms of extremism.”

For its part, Germany expressed on Sunday its “great satisfaction” with the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria after the armed opposition factions announced his overthrow, warning at the same time of the arrival of “extremists” to power.

“The country must now not fall into the hands of other extremists in any form,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in a statement. Therefore, we call on all parties to assume all their responsibilities towards all Syrians.”
