The Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region reported, today, Wednesday, that the number of victims of the methanol poisoning accident recorded in the Sidi Allal Tazi community (Kenitra Province) reached 8 deaths.


The directorate explained, in a statement, a copy of which was received by NajibpressENG today, Wednesday, that “between six o’clock in the evening on Monday, June 3, and eight o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, cases of methanol poisoning were recorded in The ranks of 114 people at the level of the Sidi Allal Tazi community, territorially affiliated with the Kenitra province, were laboratory confirmed by the Moroccan Center for Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance in Rabat.


The same source added that taking this substance exposed these people to severe poisoning complications, “as it caused the death of 8 people, 7 of whom were recorded as dead at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kenitra, while another death was recorded at the Zubair Skirj Hospital in Souk El Arbaa.” the West".


The same source recorded that “81 other cases of infection are under medical care across the region’s various hospital centers.” The matter concerns 28 cases at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kenitra, including 3 cases in the recovery department, while 38 people were recorded leaving the hospital after their condition improved. There are also 40 cases in the Moulay Youssef Regional Center in Rabat, of which two cases were referred to the Department of Resuscitation, and they, along with 20 other cases, are undergoing hemodialysis at the Hemodialysis Center at the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat as a result of complications from taking this substance.


The Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region confirmed that “as soon as it was notified of this painful incident, it quickly mobilized its various medical and nursing staff, as well as the various means and capabilities necessary to provide care and medical care for the injured, in cooperation with the various authorities and stakeholders, as well as recruiting all officials.” As well as the health teams that were placed on high alert from the first moments of notice.”


She added that “all the necessary capabilities to receive new imported cases have also been monitored at the level of the various health institutions in the region, as well as coordination with local authorities to issue an alert to search for other cases that have visited health centers and hospitals at the regional level.”


The Directorate called on “male and female citizens in the Kenitra Province to report any similar case and go directly to the nearest health institution in order to obtain appropriate care and avoid any serious health complications.”
